After Class One

Hello everyone,
Very nice to meet you yesterday and I feel like we're off to a great start. Today I'm sending the blog invitations, so please log in and try posting an introduction. Just tell us a bit about yourself, where you are in PDP, what you hope to teach and most importantly, what your plans are for the summer! We'll take a week to get used to using the blog and next week we'll begin our Reading postings.
Also for homework this week is to read Chapters 1 & 2 in our course textbook and have a look at the syllabus. See you next Thursday! (Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.)

  2. Hello, my name is Rachel and I am part of the “Creative Collaborative Communities” (C3) Module based at the Surrey Campus. I am currently in my third PDP semester after having completed practicums in both Kindergarten and Grade 3. I completed my first undergraduate degree here at Simon Fraser in History after doing an Associate of Arts Degree in History at Kwantlen. I am hoping to get hired as a Teacher on Call this September and ideally I’d love to teach somewhere between Grades 3-5. This summer I am working towards an Education minor in Learning Disabilities. I am taking 4 courses: 2 by Distance Ed., 1 in Burnaby and this one in Surrey. I’m also working part-time and coaching cheerleading.

    Hello everyone,
My name is Shanie and I just completed my 401/402 semester where I did my practicum in a grade 5 class. I am really excited about this course, the practical “tools” I hope to acquire, and the opportunity to use them during my 405 semester in September. Having done my first practicum in an intermediate class, I am hoping to do my long practicum with primary students, preferably grade 3. As for my plans for the summer, hmmm…I haven’t really had the opportunity to think that far ahead. My brother in law is getting married in the middle of August, and so we will have family from Scotland staying with us. We don’t know how long they will be staying yet, so we (my husband, son, and I) can’t really make any plans of our own yet  Have a great week.

  4. Hello my name is Helen. I am in my second semester of PDP. I did my first practicum and it was amazing. I am hoping to go back to the same school for my long practicum. I am feeling overwhelmed with all the courses as I have to take 5. I compete with my dog Keesha in agility. I am going to regionals next weekend in Campbell River and if we qualify, I will be going to Ottawa for nationals. Have a great weekend.

  5. Hello all. My name is Amber and I am in my third semester of PDP. I was in the Diversity in the Urban Classroom (DUC) module at SFU Surrey. I did my short practicum in a Grade 7 classroom and my long practicum in Grade 5, both at Lena Shaw Elementary. My ideal teaching age is students somewhere between Grades 3-5. I’m actually taking two semesters to finish my coursework so I won’t be graduating PDP until December 2009.

I’m fairly comfortable with posting on the blog. One of my hobbies is my blog on crafts and fibre arts, which I’ve been maintaining for a little over a year now. If anyone’s curious, they can have a look here.

No formal plans for the summer yet. Hopefully just spending a lot of time with family and friends. One of my cousins is getting married in August. He’s having an outdoor wedding at his parents house in Langley, so we don’t even get to use it as an excuse to go on vacation. Oh well. I’m still looking forward to the time off.

  6. Hi everyone,

My name is Stephanie (the one with the ice pack!) I finished my PDP in 2006 and have been teaching for 2.5 years as a TOC, and one year as a Music teacher. I really enjoy grades 1-4, but ideally, I'd like to teach a gr.2 or 3 class. In the summer, I'll be working with SFU Summer Camps as well as taking this class. I am really looking forward to learning other strategies and how it can be applied to my practice. In my spare time, I enjoy indoor rockclimbing, hiking, swimming, bowling, organizing social events, and I am thinking of doing the Amazing Vancouver Race in July, for fun of course!

If anyone wants to get a social gathering going, let me know! I'm up for that! Anyway, have a great weekend. Looking forward to meeting and talking to all of you!

  7. Hello,
My name is Melani. I just completed my 402 semester in the PTEM program. My practicum was in a grade 3 class and I am not sure what grade I will get for my long practicum. I completed my degree at UVic with a major in Psychology and a minor in Biology. I look forward to teaching any grade when my PTEM program is complete in April 2010. I currently work as an Education Assistant for the Chilliwack School District and also as the Education Coordinator at Squiala First Nation. I will continue my work with Squiala throughout the summer as well as work on the 2 courses I am taking at SFU Surrey. I am currently 5 months pregnant, so you all will get to see my belly grow over the coming months! The rest of my summer will be filled with planning and preparing for baby! Looking forward to getting to know everyone!

My name is Jamie and I am part of the Diversity in the Urban Classroom (DUC) module. This is my third semester. I was in a Grade 4 class for both my short and long practicums. I like teaching all the grades but ideally I would like to teach Grades 2-4. This semester I am taking 4 classes, 1 in Burnaby, 1 by Distance Education and 2 in Surrey. I am working towards a Bachelor of Education as a Second Degree with a Minor in Learning Disabilities. This summer will probably be busy! Besides doing schoolwork, I have a few weddings to attend and hope to head up to Kamloops to visit family and relax by the lake.

I'm Kathie, and I'm part of the Surrey-based DUC module. I completed my 401/402, then decided I needed to take a beak from 405, and am currently working on my 404 courses part time. Currently, I work with students with behavioural and learning challenges, and have experience working with children who need extra support in academic subjects, particularly with learning to read. My greatest interest is in the field of learning disabilities, and I also enjoy teaching the early to mid primary grades.
This summer, I plan to work, enjoy my garden, and spend as much time as I can with my daughter, who just got married last year.
I look forward to exploring some new perspetives on teaching reading, and delving a little deeper into what it means to become a fluent reader.

  11. Hi,

I’m Destiny. I am in my second semester of the PDP in the Learning and Literacies for Life in the Urban Classroom module. I did my short practicum in Surrey in a grade 4 class and loved it. My SA was so supportive and flexible, and the students were so much fun to work with and were so well behaved. I have my Bachelors in Arts with a major in History. This semester I am working on getting my Bachelors of Education with a minor in Curriculum and Instruction. I am taking four classes this semester, one of them through distance ed.

I am looking forward to this semester, because I have a 5 year old daughter and I am planning on applying a lot of what I learn to getting her ready for kindergarten.

  12. Hello,
My name is Craig. I am in my 2nd semester of my PDP. I am in the L3UC module, which stands for Learning and Literacy’s for Life in the Urban Classroom. I did my short practicum in a grade seven class and I am looking forward to getting back into a classroom to teach. With that being said I am also excited to learn the tools that will make me a better teacher. It's the idea of being a life longer learner. I think my ideal age group is grade 5-7. Basically I am afraid of the K’s. I am open to new and exciting experiences so challenge in other grades I would be open to.

  13. Hi everyone! My name is Allison and I am in the L3UC module of PDP. I just completed my 401/402 practicum in a second grade classroom in Surrey. It was a great experience and I can’t wait to get back into the classroom.
At the moment I have no plans for the summer aside from attending my five classes at SFU. That really doesn’t leave time for much else! I just hope to find some time to sit in the sun!

  14. Hello there
My name is Charisma and I live in Surrey. I am taking this course to complete my Bachelors of Learning Disabilities. I completed my practicums in grades 2 & 6 and don’t really have a grade preference. I think there are positives and negatives about every grade. I will be completely done PDP when the summer semester is over. YEAH!
My hope for this course is that I will learn more about how we learn to read. I have always LOVED reading and really want to instill that love in my students! I think this course will be beneficial to myself as a life-long learner, as well as my future students.
About me...I am a hardworking kinda girl, who enjoys loyal friends (and their kids), a good book, FOOD, beer, traveling with my sweetie, and sleep. I am taking 5 courses this semester, so I am feeling a little frazzled.
As for summer plans, haven’t really made too many as I don’t think I will have much free time. I hope to get some camping in, learn to ride an ATV and dirt bike with my hubby, go to several weddings, and celebrate my own birthday and 14 year anniversary.
    Happy studies everyone…

  15. Hi Everyone ,
My name is Mandi, I am in the third and last semester of PDP. I am very excited to get out there and start TOCing!! My passion is secondary English and that’s what I hope to be eventually teaching. I am taking four courses over the summer (similar to many of you)to complete my B.Ed. requirements. Therefore, I plan to be spending a lot of my summer reading, studying and writing papers. But I also take time out to spend time with my three-year old son! I look forward to the content of this course, the readings promise to be very interesting and working with all of you!

  16. My name is Tarrie I am in my second semester of PTEM. I did my practicum in a grade 1 class and loved every moment of it. My dream grades would be grade 3 and under I think. I am a teacher assistant currently work in a Learning and Assessment center where I work with students on an intensive reading program.

As for my summer I hope to get through it in one piece. Taking 3 course, working as and two active boys who swim competitively and play baseball will make for a busy summer.

I look forward to the challenges and rewards of the coming summer!

  18. Hi all:
My name is Dennis and I am from the Playworks module. I am going to redo my long practicum in the future. I am hoping that all the designs for learning course will prep me for my next practicum. My favourite grades to teach are grade 3 and grade 4. The range that I am comfortable with is grade 2 to grade 5. My plans for summer are to study hard to make sure I am ready for my long practicum, find a full time job when my classes are over on August 5th and spend time with my friends which I haven’t be doing since I began PDP. My hobbies include building models and tennis. I look forward to working with all of you as we share our thoughts on the readings!

Hi! My name is Sarah. I have a certificate in Early Childhood Education and a BA in Child and Youth Care from the University of the Fraser Valley. I am currently in the PTEM-9 (paraprofessional teacher education module) and am in my second semester. I am working toward a minor in learning disabilities within the PTEM program. My first practicum was in a grade five classroom and I loved it! I have not decided which grade I prefer, I am open to any elementary grade at this point!

I work for the Surrey School District as a Child and Youth Care Worker and am taking three education courses. I also volunteer with a youth group at least one night a week, however I usually get roped into more :-). I am hoping to have one week away with my husband and puppy this summer, even if I just get as far as Hope, to spend time with family and friends!

I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and to learning all this course has to offer!

  20. Hi everyone. My name is Diana. I have just completed my 401/402 short practicum in a grade 5 class. I also just found out my placement for my 405 practicum and discovered I am teaching grade 7 in the fall. I quite enjoy the intermediate grades. I look forward to this class and possibly using some of the ideas in my 405 practicum. This summer I'm pretty much dedicated to my school since I am taking 5 courses.
I look forward to working with you all and getting to know you all. Good luck in all your course work.

  21. Hello! My name is Jen. I finished PDP in 2007 and have been TOCing for two years now, as well as teaching French prep in the Surrey district. I hope to get a classroom position soon - my ideal class would be in grade 5, 6 or 7. I am on the last semester of my Post-Baccalaureate diploma and am looking forward to relaxing in August when all of my courses will be finished! Also, I am part of my best friend's wedding this coming July (probably around the most stressful time of the semester, as well), so I am excited for that.

I wish everyone good luck with their studies this semester! It should be fun :)

  22. Hello everyone, my name is Dajana. I graduated from SFU’s PDP program last year and have been a TOC ever since. I completed both practicum I and II in a 6/7 class in Burnaby. My wish was always to teach intermediate grade but as I have been TOCing for the past year and working with primary grades I’m slowly starting to change my mind (main reason why I took this course).
In my spare time I enjoy cooking and eating, travelling and spending time with family and friends. I’m very excited about this course and I’m looking forward to getting to know you all.
I don’t have any major plans during the summer except from studying and teaching summer school in Burnaby.
Good luck in all your course work and see you tomorrow.

  23. Hi everyone...
I am Julie and I have been teaching in the Surrey School District for 19 years. Most of my experience has been in Kindergarten. I have also taught grades 1, 2 and 6. I am currently a Learner Support Teacher (LST), which includes supporting children who have Learning Disabilities, English as a Second Language and those just needing some extra support. My current caseload consists of 29 students (Kindergarten, grades 1,3&4), which are divided into small groups consisting of two to six children. I even work one on one with a couple of students. I am thoroughly enjoying the change from being a classroom teacher to a teacher of small groups requiring more intense and individualized instruction. It is an ongoing challenge as well as rewarding!
By taking this course, I am hoping to challenge myself by further exploring areas in reading instruction. I am also completing my Bachelor of General Studies degree.
I am looking forward to working in groups, sharing experiences and knowledge and having fun!!

    Julie

  24. Hi, I'm Vicky.

I'm in the IPTEM/AFTEM (Indigenous Peoples Teacher Education Module & Aboriginal Focus Teacher Education Module). This is the first time SFU is doing this program in the lower mainland so its a bit of a bumpy ride so far. I did my 401/2 last semester so now I'm looking forward to my 405 practicum. I don't know where I will be at yet but I know that I want gr. 5-7.

I am doing my Education minor in learning disabilities. I completed a BSc. in Nutritional Science at UBC prior to this. I am looking forward to learning how to teach reading! I am not a very good reader so this will be interesting.

My plan for summer is to get through all of the courses in one piece and have a decent birthday (its the last day of class)which I don't think is going to happen because I got a few things due around that time. boooo

  25. Hi everyone!

My name is Esanju and I've just completed my 402 of the PTEM program. I'm currently a Youth Care Worker in the Langley district (I really love my job!). By background is in psychology and my minor is in Learning Disabilities.

Last semester my practicum was in a grade one class and my 405 will likely be in another primary class. I hope to work with any grades from K-7 down the road.

Even though I'm a slow reader, I love literature and I look forward to learning how to teach kids how to read.

As for the summer, I will continue taking four classes and trying to keep my head on straight. Maybe I'll get to throw in a camping trip or outdoor concert too.

Looking forward to soldiering on with you,

    Esanju

This summer i plan on working and finishing the rest of my courses. I am taking my bachelor of education and am minoring in curriculum.

  27. Hi everyone!

I really enjoyed last class and the readings for today. I am excited to learn more about literacy. I am intimidated by the idea and feel that this course will help wipe out my fears of teaching early primary.

I have finished my PDP and am currently TOCing in Surrey, Vancouver, and Abbotsford. I did my practicums in grade 5 and grade 3. Thus, I have no experience in the K/gr.1 areas of reading and writing development. This course will be useful for me in upcoming job interviews, as I would like to explore a continuing contract in this area. A challenge I am looking forward to.

    Good luck all!
